The first season of the Pakistan Super League was something extremely special for cricket fans as well as Pakistan Cricket.
Pakistan Super League was the ground breaking venture in the history of Pakistan cricket and the first season in 2016 went down really well with the fans and to be precise was in accordance with their expectations.
The 3 week tournament made home to Dubai and Sharjah where 5 franchises, Gladiators, United, Zalmi, Qalanders and Kings, fought in some nail-biting games to lift the trophy with Islamabad United being triumphant and Quetta Gladiators coming second.
Let’s take a look at some of the most cherished moments from the inaugural season of HBL Pakistan Super League.
Islamabad United vs Karachi Kings – Last 2 balls
With 9 needed from the last 2 balls of the game, Ravi Bopara struck a six over long on from a full toss by Shane Watson. Watson held his nerve and defended 3 from the last ball with United earning their first win of the tournament.
Shahid Afridi’s Best T20 Figures:
Quetta had a promising start with 40-0 but that soon went pear shaped with Afridi striking at regular intervals to take the game from the Gladiators and setting up a comprehensive victory against a team that was looking unstoppable throughout the tournament.
Quetta Gladiators vs Lahore Qalanders Last Over:
The Qalanders put a fighting total of 201 in the first innings with Chris Gayle finally performing and leading the way. Quetta had a edgy start but soon got on their feet with a good partnership from KP and Sangakarra. Mohammed Nabi took the game away from the Qalanders by hitting two fours and a six to win the game and stopping the Qalanders from going through to the knock out round.
Mohammed Amir’s Hat-rick:
Mohammed Amir stole the limelight already on the second day of the PSL by taking the first hat-rick of the torunament. He bowled Dwayne Bravo’s middle stump, had Zohaib Khan caught behind, and trapped Kevon Cooper lbw with successive deliveries in the 19th over, restricting Lahore to a below-par 125 for 8.
Sharjeel Khan’s Century:
Sharjeel Khan scored the first hundred of the Pakistan Super League as Islamabad United galloped into the final with a comprehensive 50-run win against Peshawar Zalmi. Sharjeel’s 50-ball hundred powered Islamabad to 176 for 3 before left-arm spinner Imran Khalid’s four-for made sure Peshawar were bowled out for 126 with two overs to spare. Sharjeel’s blade cut through the bowling line-up of the Zalmi like a hot knife through butter by dipositing legends like Shaun Tait over the boundary line.
