Islamabad United Analysis

Hey Guys,

The Pakistan Super League is all set to start on February 4th 2016. On the 21st and the 22nd of December 2015 the inaugural PSL draft was taken place in the National Academy of Pakistan in Lahore to maintain balance among all five squads of the tournament.

In each blog, I will analyse every team of the Pakistan Super league a.k.a PSL. So lets start the discussion about the Islamabad United.

Bought by Leonine Global Sports for $1.5 million, United is one of the underrated teams of the tournament along with Karachi. They lack the fire-power, big names and match winners but these 2 teams have a lot of potential. United is captained by the 41 year old Misbah-ul-Haq who is still very fit for his age.

Batting Line-up

United have a pretty decent batting line-up. Baber Azam and Misbah-ul-Haq are players that can produce partnerships, which will be important to build up a inning. Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan are good players of the seamers which will be important on a fast wicket like Dubai. Another player that has been piling up runs in the domestic circuit is Umar Amin but he has not performed for the national squad lately.

United is playing with 2 wicket-keepers, Sam Billings and Brad Haddin, and both of these players are hard-hitting players that can keep the scoreboard going at any time so now the question stands, who does he play ?

Bowlers

The attack will be lead by Sami and Irfan, 2 quick bowlers that can get early breakthroughs. Sami had a a brilliant BPL and is likely to keep his form going and maybe in the World T20. Both of the players have experience and sheer pace. To join them there is Andre Russel who had a brilliant BBL and has pace as well.

In the spin department, United have Ajmal and Badree. Ajmal has lost his poison on the batsman but is ready for a memorable comeback. With Watson, Zaidi and Russel United have the most diverse bowling line-up of the tournament.

All-rounders

Yes you read it right, with Watson, Russell and Ashar Zaidi United’s have the power to take down any team in Pakistan Super League. Watson and Russell are two players who are famous for their fire power and we are all waiting for some fireworks from these two. Ashar Zaidi just had a dream BPL season and Pakistani fans are anxiously waiting to see him in action. Kamran Ghulam is another gem in the closet of Islamabad United, he is a great chap and should be given a chance, because he has the caliber to play for National side.

Players to Watch Out For

Andre Russel is a player that I believe will continue his great form from the BBL because of his aggressive nature towards the game. Ajmal is another player that will perform well and is back for a memorable comeback.

Underdogs

Kamran Ghulam and Khalid Latif are two players who could surprise cricket pundits with their blistering performances. Kamran Ghulam has played for the under 19 side and is considered as a bright prospect for Pakistan. Kalid Latif although couldn’t portray the potential he as in international circuit but he would mount runs in PSL-T20.

Peshawar Zalmi Analysis

So lets start the discussion about the Peshawar Zalmi.

Peshawar Zalmi was bought by Haier Pakistan $1.6 Million. With the most searched up team in the HBL PSL, they have the biggest fan-base of all the 5 franchises in the tournament. The Zalmis are captained by the one and only ‘Boom Boom’ – Shahid Afridi.

Batting Line-up

Hafeez and Tamim Iqbal will lead the Zalmis batting attack in the competition. heir form and performance will determine the course of Zalmis innings, as both players have potential to play long innings. Shahis Yousaf and Dawid Malan are the key players in middle order both have vast experience of domestic leagues and are famous for their clinical performances.

If one of them holds an end, then the late middle order could easily steal away the show with quick 60-70 runs in last 4-5 overs. Musaddiq and IsrarUllah are other two young guns from whom Peshawar fans have high hopes. We might see Brad Hodge in action too for Zalmis, and he too is an explosive finisher, so in a nutshell Peshawar Zalmis have a good batting lineup but it would be interesting to see how they manage to climb back if their openers fall early.

Bowlers

Imagine Wahab, Tait, Jordan and Junaid Khan bowling from different ends one after the other, opposition would obviously seek shelter from them. Peshawar has this amazing bowling lineup which is a perfect blend of variety loaded with talent and lubricated with experience.

Wahab and Tait will surely get wickets with there pace but will definitely go for a couple of boundaries. Their back-up will be Junaid and Jordan who are precise and quick and can bowl good yorkers which will be crucial to contain their opposition. Sammy can also bowl some very economical overs right at the end of the innings.

In the spin department, Zalmi have Arifi and Abdur Rehman who will really spin the bowl on a pitch like Dubai and will play a decisive role as the league goes on.

All-rounders

Zalmi have unarguably the best all-rounders in the tournament with Afridi, Sammy, Aamer Yamin and Jim Allenby. These players are game changers and hard hitters. These bowlers can also bowl 3-4 very economical overs.

The all-rounder we must not talk about is Shahid Afridi. On his day, Afridi can leave the other teams in pieces. There is a chance that Afridi might shine in the PSL. Just like the the old days, hitting boundaries over mid-wicket and extra-cover. He is a very energetic player and that energy will keep his troops on their toes through each bowl of the game. Despite, all these advantages I would not place my bets on him as he has not been performing in recent days.

Players to Watch Out For

Kamran Akmal is one player who I feel will surely make headlines with his performance in PSL-T20 and if he succeeds in performing, he could win a ticket to India for World T20 Cup. Another player that I believe will perform is Sammy as he is cool under pressure and can score runs and get wickets in the death overs despite his debatable batting technique.

Underdogs

Shahid Yousaf is one guy who has constantly been scoring runs in the domestic circuit, thus I’ll place my bets on him in the Fantasy League.

Peace Out,
